This is mainly due to some top-notch performances, with Sean Penn owning every scene as psychotic mob boss Mickey Cohen, who runs 1949 Los Angeles.
Josh Brolin is also convincing as police sergeant John O’Mara, a former World War II soldier, who is picked to head a secret unit whose sole aim is to take down Cohen.
As they start attacking Cohen’s empire, the ruthless mob king thinks it is a rival gang but soon he realises the truth and the stage is set for a bloody and explosive finale.
Comparisons with ‘The Untouchables’ are obvious and while it is not in that league, and it is fairly predictable, this is still an entertaining movie which is well worth a watch.
