We’re into January 2013. It’s back to work for many today.
At the weekend we’ll tidy away the lights and decorations and Christmas will be over for another year. Way back in 1973 Wizzard sang ‘I wish it could be Christmas every day’ - a song you doubtless heard many times in the run-up to December 25.
Is it a sentiment you share? Christmas every day? Many a child would be delighted – presents, parties and time off school. Many an adult would go into a cold sweat just thinking about it – stress, expense and awkward relations! Yet these things are all trimmings, the tinselly bits that decorate our Christmas celebration.
At the heart of Christmas is the birth of the baby Jesus. No ordinary baby. A baby given a very special name – Immanuel, which means God with us.
A baby who came to show us what God is like. A baby who grew up to be a teacher and a preacher, telling us how God wants us to live. A baby who came so that we too can become children of God.
Now the wonderful thing is that these things are true not just on Christmas Day but on every day of the year. Jesus, God’s gift to us, is not just a Christmas gift but an everyday gift. It can be Christmas every day. And that’s not something to get stressed out about but to celebrate.
‘I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.’
This is good news for every day.
