As the football season opens the rest of the summer of sport quickly goes into archive.
Andy Murray at Wimbledon and the Open golf at Muirfield seem to have come and gone so quickly so maybe the associated music will help form a lasting memory. Alistair Griffin and Leddra Chapman will release ‘The One’ as a single next month, which was used by the BBC for their closing images for the Open. Featuring the Grimethorpe Colliery Band this dramatic song has inspirational lyrics and builds to a wonderful anthem. The band, who were featured in the movie Brassed Off, have financial difficulties now and Alistair is planning a fundraising album with guests to help them carry on. Meantime his charitable projects continue with the Trussell Trust and his short tour comes to Glasgow Tchai-Ovna House Of Tea for a show next Monday.
Multimedia artist and accomplished film director David Lynch has released his new album Big Dream (Sunday Best). Misty and atmospheric he describes it as modern blues, but there will be as many who will hail this triumph and for some it will be too dark. It is consistent however and may even be a head turner as ambient music at the right moment. One hidden gem which is part of a bonus download features vocalist Lykke Li called ‘I’m Waiting Here’ has heartbeat percussion and ghostly echoes of vocals on a subtle arrangement. Lynch followers have plenty to collect here with heavy vinyl double LP versions. Well done Public Service Broadcasting now nominated for Independent Breakthrough of the Year and Independent Album of the Year. Their debut self titled album released through Test Card Recordings in May stood out among some mediocre releases from that time.
