My Week - with Gordon Holmes

Three wood: SOME sports stars can make the transition from excellence in their chosen field to TV personality with consumate ease.

For example, Matt Dawson seems to be everywhere these days, and love him or loathe him, the ‘boy’ Lineker is a natural and amiable host.

But going by the latest advert for a well-known finance group, I don’t think I’m being too harsh when I say that Rory McIlroy is unlikely to be pursuing a career in front of the camera when he eventually can’t play with his balls any more.

World’s number one golfer he may be, but the Irishman is so wooden trying to deliver his lines, he makes co-stars Jenson Button and Jessica Ennis seem interesting - and that takes some doing.

Growing up: IT seems but a blink of the eye since he was born but in April, Holmes Jnr will start nursery.

In preparation for this momentous event, his assigned playworker visited the house this week, ostensibly to meet Jnr but possibly also to check out the parents (so just as well I was at work then...).

I’m told it went well and he now has two taster sessions at the nursery before Easter to help ready him for the big day. Just hope the nursery is ready for him..!

Name game: THE Royal Navy’s final Type 45 Daring-class anti-air warfare destroyer left the Clyde shipyard where it was built this week for its base in Portsmouth. A huge, fearsome looking craft it is, with the latest in technology and a name fit to match its appearance... Duncan.

Eh, what? Apologies to those with that name but I wasn’t sure Duncan the Destroyer quite conveyed a warrior of the seas.

But then I did a little research and discovered this is the seventh RN ship to be named HMS Duncan, after Admiral Adam Duncan, 1st Viscount Duncan of Camperdown, hero of the Battle of Camperdown.

So I’ll let them off.

On song?: AFTER 76-year-old Engelbert Humperthingy’s sparkling second-last performance at Eurovision last year, the BBC have this time gone for youth with 61-year-old Bonnie Tyler. Not sure her voice is the same though as last time I heard her sing it was clear and pure and I could understand every word she said...

This week ... Four days intense training course for work... Lost an argument with play dough... Said sad farewell to Brendan Brady.
