Thought for the Week: Rev. Rosemary Frew, Abbotshall Parish Church

I love roller coasters. It’s a mind over matter thing.

In my mind I know I’m safe even if my body is telling me that this is madness. Exhilaration and terror.

On Sunday we celebrate Palm Sunday and begin the journey of Holy Week - a journey I often describe as a roller coaster ride.

Put yourself in the shoes (sandals) of the disciples of Jesus.

There was the elation of the Sunday.

Jesus was welcomed into Jerusalem by cheering crowds, waving palm branches, praising God.

There was the intimacy of the last supper on the Thursday, but the warning bells were starting to sound.

There was the terror in the Garden of Gethsemane as Jesus was arrested.

The utter desolation of the Friday with the crucifixion and burial of Jesus.

The glimmer of hope on the Sunday morning when the women tell them that Jesus is alive.

The sheer exhilaration of the Sunday evening and their encounter with the risen Christ.

We are asked to journey with Christ through Holy Week, through the highs and the lows, the exhilaration and the terror.

What makes it different for us is that we know the end of the story...
