A Glenrothes nurse, whose influential leadership skills brought her national acclaim, is to retire.
Commander Pauline Small, who is associate nurse director at NHS Fife, will step down this month after 33 years of service.
The Nursing Times magazine included her on its inaugural list of role models who have helped shape and enhance the nursing profession.
Commander Small, who is the Senior Officer, Queen Alexandra’s Royal Naval Nursing Service, Royal Naval Reserve, served as NHS Fife’s dedicated Armed Forces Champion, which saw her promote the links between NHS and Military organisations, developing and maintaining joint working arrangements.
Dr Brian Montgomery, interim chief executive, said: “While it is disappointing to lose someone of Pauline’s calibre, it has been a great privilege to work alongside her. Her knowledge, skills and dedication to the development and continued support of staff have been ever-present throughout her career and not only has the region benefited from her leadership, so too has the nursing profession as a whole.”
