If the enthusiasm could be bottled, Kirkcaldy town centre would be transformed within weeks.

The desire to spark change, and make the heart of the Lang Toun a vibrant, bustling area was underlined at the recent online public meeting organised by Greener Kirkcaldy.

Around 60 people logged in to discuss the key challenges, and share ideas on the road ahead as the town centre emerges from lockdown.

Now stage two is underway with an online survey from Greener Kirkcaldy.

It wants to update its own strategic plan, published in 2018, for a greener and fairer place to live - ideas which are now firmly at the forefront of the regeneration efforts for the Lang Toun.

It wants to hear from a wide range of people with Kirkcaldy’s future at heart.

Their ideas will not only help shape the organisations’s future planning, but will also feed into the new Love Oor Lang Toun group’s plans - it has already brought online platform ShopAppy to town - and the Fife Free Press’ Civic Conversation series which has invited local people to have their say on where the town goes from here as it adapts to a very different sense of normality.

In return for five minutes of your time, the entire town could benefit.

They key questions include:What do you love about Kirkcaldy right now? What should our future ambitions be?What changes need to happen to make them a reality? What should our top priorities be?What part should Greener Kirkcaldy have?

Launching its survey, Greener Kirkcaldy said: “What should our town, and our community, be like after the Covid-19 crisis is over? We want to hear your views on what post-lockdown Kirkcaldy and our future plans should look like.

“Your ideas will play a key role in informing Greener Kirkcaldy’s future planning, and will also feed into the new Love Oor Lang Toun group’s plans and the Fife Free Press’s Civic Conversation series. We would love to know what you think.”

The challenge of bringing Kirkcaldy out of lockdown, and tackling the known issues which surround our town centre is huge, but there is huge enthusiasm and commitment to make a positive difference.

The rallying call behind the online event - the first to be staged since lockdown began in March - was “let’s act as if we own the place!”

And the emphasis was very much on how individuals and groups can come together to shape the future.

Citing the many examples of community support during lockdown, Suzy Goodsir, chief executive of Greener Kirkcaldy, said: “How do we build on what we have learned to comeback even stronger?

“It isn’t enough to expect someone else to do something whether that’s the council or a nameless ‘them’ - we need to use this turning point to re-think where we live, enjoy our green spaces and act together to make a difference.”
