Anger as Hamish the cat statue vandalised

A statue honouring the St Andrews town cat, Hamish McHamish, was vandalised over the weekend.

The bronze statue, which was erected in 2014 to celebrate the popular mog, had been covered in paint.

Thankfully, the St Andrews Clean & Green team were able to scrub off the paint.

However, the vandalism has been highlighted as the latest in an increasing amount of anti-social incidents in the St Andrews.

“The attack on the statue of Hamish the cat in St Andrews was just another example of the increasing number of incidents of anti-social behaviour in the town,” said St Andrews Environmental Network project manager Jane Kell.

“The reason St Andrews always looks as if it does not have a problem is because of our Clean & Green team’s quick response times to reported incidents.

“A growing amount of their time is spent on graffiti and sticker removal and repairs to benches and planters damaged in acts of vandalism.

“The team has been largely funded by the businesses in St Andrews through the levy they pay to BID St Andrews. The St Andrews BID comes to the end of its five-year term in December 2020 and we only hope the business support the renewal of the BID and continue to fund Clean & Green.”
