One of the most established annual fundraisers for Maggie’s Fife has been postponed.

The Gillian Parsons Memorial Golf Day, due to take place on Sunday at Dunnikier Park Golf Club in Kirkcaldy, is the latest event to fall victim to the COVID restrictions.

Organisers have urged supporters to donate online to ensure our cancer care centre doesn’t suffer the full hilt.

The fund has already got off to a fantastic start with a £1000 donation from Briggs Marine of Burntisland - long standing supporters of Maggie’s.

The event was set to mark its 15th anniversary and expected to break fundraising records, having already netted a magnificent £112k for Maggie’s Fife since its inception.

But, current restrictions mean it has had to postpone its big day until Sunday, August 29, 2021.

Dave Foster, organiser, said: “Sadly, we’ve had to postpone our brilliant golf day out for Maggie’s as the logistics were proving just too difficult under current restrictions.

“We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of our supporters over the years and despite the disappointment of the event being postponed, we have had several donations without the golf day.”

Shona Hutchison, event organiser and sister of Gillian Parsons, who the event is in memory of added: “Gillian had used Maggie’s Edinburgh after her diagnosis and found great comfort from the wonderful staff and users.

“She was an active friend of Maggie’s Fife and helped fundraise during the initial building stage.

“Unfortunately, my sister didn’t get to see the centre open but she would be extremely proud of her legacy, ensuring the people of Fife have their own Maggie’s”.

The drive to generate funds online was welcomed by Maggie’s Fife.

Adam Kent, the centre’s new fundraising manager, said: “We are so grateful to Dave and Shona for all the hard work that they put in to organise such a wonderful and successful event year-after-year.

“Their support makes a massive difference to the centre and while we share their disappointment that this year’s event has had to be cancelled, it’s clear that it was the correct decision given the circumstances.

“We’re delighted that so many people are still keen to support Maggie’s.

“A special thanks must go to Briggs Marine for their generous donation. It goes without saying that we look forward to the event returning next year.”

Our Maggie’s Centre relies almost entirely on voluntary donations to be able to offer this high quality, professional support.
