The appeal comes from members of Growing Kirkcaldy, the group which promotes and develops horticultural projects in the town.

Growing Kirkcaldy works hard every year to make sure the town looks its best ahead of visits from judges from national competitions like Britain In Bloom.

But while horticultural contests are on hold for now, the members say work still needs to continue to help keep the town looking smart.

The move comes as Judith Kerr, Growing Kirkcaldy secretary, revealed that as Fife Council is having to change its priorities in terms of allocating resources this year as a result of the pandemic.

She said: “Departments such as the Parks, Streets and Open Spaces team and Transportation are affected and this year there will be no floral enhancement so we need to keep the streets looking tidy and you can help!

“Our small team of volunteers will be continuing the planting of the beds we look after such as Bennochy Bridge and the bottom of Charlotte Street using plants some of you have donated and the money from the wreaths we made and sold at Christmas. We will also be planting our planters along the Prom, filling our barrier baskets, brightening up the Town House area and developing a stumpery at the Galleries.

“But you can help elsewhere! Please can you just pull out any weeds in pavements outside your house or if you see a weed anywhere please just pull it! If we all perform such a small task it will help our town look smart again.”

She added: “We have been very lucky to ‘stay home in Kirkcaldy’ given the walks and green space we have and we should be proud of our town.”
