Appeal to place headstones at graves of five Fife men killed in WW1

Resting places in cemeteries across region

An appeal has been launched to help find the families of five soldiers who gave their lives for their country.

They are all laid to rest at cemeteries in Fife, but the Commonwealth War Graves Commission wants to commemorate them with a headstone.

The men were all killed in World War One, and now the commission wants to trace anyone who can help find their next of kin.

Private Robert Brewster of the Seaforth Highlanders was killed on September 29, 1915, and was buried in Methillmill Cemetery, Wemyss.

Cadet B Hodgson, of the Royal Flying Corp, was killed on March 23, 1918 and was buried at Dunfermline Cemetery.

From the Royal Navy, R. Muir, stoker, second class, died on October 27, 1918 and was buried at Dysart Cemetery.

The two remaining soldiers were buried at East Wemyss - Private C.S. Maguire of the Scots Guards (killed July 123, 1915) and Sapper A. Wilson, Royal Engineers, who died July 9, 1920.

The commission says in each case the private memorial marking the grave no longer provided adequate commemoration, and wants to erect a headstone marking their ultimate sacrifice.
