Wendy McCormack (41) from Kirkcaldy was diagnosed with thyroid cancer seven years ago and after recovering she began a struggle with weight problems.

She said: “I had my thyroid removed and ever since I’ve had issues with my weight.

“So I decided 18 months ago to join Slimming World and lost about three and a half stone.

“I wanted to do some exercise too so I started walking with a couple of girls from the class. Then I decided that I wanted to set myself a challenge.”

Wendy, an NHS diabetes specialist podiatrist, took part in last year’s Moonwalk and said it was “an amazing experience and a sense of achievement”.

She added: “I did the ‘Full Moon’ – 26.2 miles – and I did it all by myself, but I had so much fun last year and met people that I now hold as dear friends.”

Now Wendy is back in training for this year’s event – in Edinburgh on June 10 – and says part of her inspiration is tackling the deadly disease of cancer.

“It’s affected both sides of my family,” she said. “We had a huge shock a few years ago when both my nieces were battling it at the same time.

“So I want to give something back and raise money for different cancer charities.”

Wendy is also selling cupcakes at work for £1 as well as taking part in the Moonwalk and hopes to raise £500.

She urges anyone who is fit and healthy to take part in the event.

“You don’t have to do the full Moonwalk,” she said.”There’s the six mile challenge or the half marathon too. It’s open to anybody and it’s a great experience.”
