Broadband company supports Cupar Food Bank with donation

To mark the one-year anniversary of finishing its network build in Cupar, broadband provider GoFibre donated to Cupar Food Bank to help it meet the increased demand for emergency food parcels during the festive season

Cupar Food Bank recently became a GoFibre customer on the company’s charity rate, and when engineers were installing the broadband, they learned it was struggling to keep up with the rise in need for food parcels this winter and suggested that GoFibre should donate.

The food bank provides emergency food and practical support to people facing hardship in the town. Those in need are identified by third parties in the local community, including doctors, teachers, health visitors and social workers, and given a voucher to take to the food bank. At the food bank, they are given three days of emergency food. While their food parcel is being prepared, food bank volunteers offer the person a hot drink, a biscuit and a chat. The volunteers are specially trained to offer information and practical guidance, so they can signpost the person to further local support services.

It's run in partnership with UK-wide anti-poverty charity Trussell.

In order to support people in desperate need in Cupar, GoFibre donated £200 towards Cupar Food Bank’s vital work.

The broadband company completed its Cupar network build in December last year and, since then, the company has seen significant growth in Fife. GoFibre has over 26,000 premises ready to connect to its network in Fife, including over 3500 in Cupar.

Amy Swinley, GoFibre engineer, said: “Cupar Food Bank provides vital support to people facing desperate situations, but, as we learned when we installed its broadband, it’s facing a sharp increase in need this winter that it’s struggling to keep up with.

“We were keen to help and knowing that GoFibre does a lot of work to give back to communities on its network, we asked HQ if the company would donate to the food bank. It was happy to help, and we hope the donation will go some way to help support people in need in Cupar this festive season.”

Steve Blake, manager of Cupar Food Bank, said: “No one should be in a position where they are struggling to meet their basic needs, such as affording food, however, last winter, 740,000 parcels were distributed to people across the UK. Food banks are facing ever increasing demand for our services, so support like this donation from GoFibre is vital so that we can continue to help people who need us. I’d like to thank GoFibre for this donation, and, if you’re in a position to give, please visit our website to learn how you can do so.”
