Caddy uses iconic Fife beaches to create stunning artworks

A creative caddy has turned the beautiful beaches of St Andrews into a canvas for his sand art.

With the golf courses closed longer than usual because of the Covid-19 pandemic, Rob Ogle III turned his attention to his creative side and started getting back into sand art.

Whether it is designs and messages supporting the Black Lives Matter movement, or creations celebrating local businesses, Rob is down at the beach most days making a new piece of art.

“It’s been non-stop,” said the 35-year-old.

“I did it through the winter, and then into spring and the summer. I’m probably doing around seven or eight a week.

“I like the peace and quiet. I help people out with their messages. Sometimes people have something to say or want a memory of St Andrews.”

Rob started doing sand art while working at a golf course during his time at high school in his native Oregon.

He and a friend would rake the bunkers, messing around and creating designs.

Now a caddy living in Blebo Craigs, Rob can spend anywhere between 45 minutes and four hours creating a piece of sand art.

People are always asking what I’m doing,” he said.

“Sometimes I don’t know. But people are so positive so I can’t complain.”

One of Rob’s pieces was for Tourism St Andrews, urging people to stay safe.

Debbie MacCallum, chairwoman of the group, said: “Rob’s fantastic sand art has been quite the talk of the town and I’ve seen many visitors down on the sands taking photos and referring to his work on social media channels.

“We were delighted when Rob did one a few weeks ago to celebrate the launch of our ‘Stay Safe St Andrews’ campaign.

“It’s wonderful to see that we are all collaborating and working hard to get our tourism economy revived after such a difficult year.”
