Celebrities send video thanks to Fife's NHS COVID heroes

A host of well-known faces from or tied to Fife have sent video messages to the Kingdom's health and social care staff to thank them for their hard work throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

Comedians Phill Jupitus and Greg Hemphill; musicians KT Tunstall and Barbara Dickson; Scots rock icons The Proclaimers; crime writer Ian Rankin; Dunfermline Athletic's Stevie Crawford and and Raith Rovers' Paul Smith; and Provost of Fife Jim Leishman stepped up to help when Covid-19 meant NHS Fife couldn't get together to shoot their annual Christmas message to staff.

The festive well-wishes were filmed to thank staff for their endeavours during the hardest year in living memory for health and social care workers.

Dr Chris McKenna, NHS Fife's medical director, said: "2020 has been a very difficult year for all of us - none more so than our NHS staff.

"We have had to work under some of the most extraordinary circumstances and I cannot thank them enough for all that they have done and continue to do over the festive period."

Still Game star Greg - who moved to Elie last year - said: "All you surgeons, doctors, nurses, porters, all you hospital workers - what can I say? it's been a hell of a year.

"But we're nearly through it and that's thanks to you guys. Nobody deserves to put their feet up more and have a wee glass of eggnog than you."

Singer KT, who grew up in St Andrews, told staff in her message: "You must be completely exhausted, traumatised, missing your families...look after yourselves. We appreciate you so much. You're doing impossible work and we're so grateful and always will be."

Each of the messages has been posted on internal staff bulletin boards and NHS Fife's Facebook page with the hashtag #behindthebauble.

Chief executive Carol Potter said it had been "really heartening" to receive the star-studded messages thanking staff for their response to the pandemic.

She added: “I want to thank all of those who have offered their thanks throughout the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I know these messages have really meant a lot to health and social care staff across Fife at a really challenging time.”
