Charitable trust marks 50 years supporting Cupar

A Cupar charitable trust has been celebrating as it marks five decades supporting the town.

The Bruce Charitable Trust, founded in August 1970, has been a part of Cupar for 50 years, providing financial aid to hundreds of causes over the decades.

The trust was set up following the passing of Charles Edward Bruce, of Castlefield Towers. It started with just over £20,000 available for distribution, with the aim to provide relief or prevention of poverty as well as advancement of education, health, arts and sports.

The last 50 years has seen the charitable trust provide grants to over 225 local causes in Cupar area.

Since the founding of the Bruce Charitable Trust, it has given more than £435,000 in grants to date to the local community. Some of the bigger benefactors have included Age Concern Cupar, Howe of Fife Rugby Club, Cupar Scouts and Guides, Cupar YMCA/YWCA and the Fife Society for the Blind.

A large number of distributions have been made to a diverse group of organisations such as Cupar in Bloom, Castle Furniture Project, Cupar Children’s Gala, Cupar Choral Society and Dairsie Community Council.

Steven Todd, trustee, said: “I am delighted that we have reached this great landmark and very proud to be a trustee in the trust’s 50th year.

“The trust has had a very positive impact on the local community over that time and will hopefully support the community for another 50 years.”

The trust currently distributes around £20,000 per year.
