Coronavirus: support for people in Levenmouth and East Neuk

With drastic measures now affecting the lives of countless residents, a number of Fifers have stepped up to help those who are either self-isolating, or are unable to venture out.

Thousands of people in Levenmouth signed up to the Coronavirus Levenmouth Support Facebook page within a few days of it launching.

The page was started after a meeting, organised by local churches, which brought together various community groups and organisations, to work out how they could best help people in the area.

The page allows people to share information, such as changes to local services, and updates on what shops have run out of certain stock, as well as providing a space for people who can not get out of the house to ask for help.

People are offering help and guidance,” said Cllr Ryan Smart.

“It’s about what is happening in Levenmouth.

“If people need help and can’t get out to shop, it gives them a platform to put out an appeal.”

A leaflet which will list important local contacts is also being developed, and will be put through letterboxes.

“Levenmouth has a great community spirit and people have a love for the area,” Cllr Smart added.

“It’s about harnessing that. The virus makes us ill, but it can’t beat us or our community spirit.”

Cllr Smart also appealed for people to continue supporting the Levenmouth Foodbank, to make sure it keeps receiving donations at this vital time.

Another group, East Neuk Community Emergency Planning Team (ENCEPT) has also been helping people in the area.

Gillian Duncan, volunteer emergency co-ordinator, said: “Our community emergency planning team is meeting on a regular basis and we are working with local pharmacies, healthcare professionals, community councils and local people to provide safe, co-ordinated community assistance to those in need.

“We would encourage anyone who needs help or support or knows someone in need within the East Neuk during this time to ring our free number 0800 999 6543 for assistance, other than emergency medical assistance where a 999 call should be made.

“We will arrange for volunteers to make deliveries or offer other support in a safe manner avoiding any unintentional infection spread.”
