Cottage Centre Appeal: ‘heartfelt’ plea for donations as demand for help soars

The Cottage Family Centre has issued a “heartfelt plea” for urgent support as it bids to support families through its lifeline Christmas appeal.

It needs more donations to keep pace with the growing numbers reaching out. The centre’s target is £60,000 to ensure no family or child is left behind this Christmas.

Kelly Rodgers from the centre said the appeal was reaching a crucial stage.

She added: “The need in our community is growing every single day, and donations are still not keeping pace with the number of families reaching out.

“We are meeting parents who are exhausted, worried, and doing everything they can to protect their children from the realities of hardship. Many are skipping meals, rationing heating, and quietly carrying burdens no family should ever have to bear.

“At a time of year when every child should feel excitement and joy, too many families are simply trying to survive. We want to change that - but we cannot do it alone.”

The centre - which has seen its appeal grow every year over the past 15 years - is urgently calling for donations of new toys for children of all ages; new pyjamas (all sizes from baby to teen); non-perishable food such as pasta, beans, cereal, rice, soups, and festive cupboard essentials - and financial contributions, which will allow the team to purchase food provision, support families with utilities, and cover any shortfall of toys.

For many parents, reaching out to The Cottage is their last resort.

Said Kelly: “They want nothing more than to give their children warmth, security, and the simple magic of Christmas morning. Every donation supports us to lift the weight from a family’s shoulders and replaces it with hope.

A small gift, a set of pyjamas, a packet of pasta… these things may seem ordinary, but to a family in crisis they are a lifeline. If you are able to give anything at all, you will be making an immediate and meaningful difference to a local family.” She also paid tribute to the many individuals, groups and businesses which have already made donations, praising their generosity and kindness.

“Every gift, will bring warmth, dignity, and comfort to a local family, and the centre is deeply grateful for every act of support.”

The Cottage Centre’s team of staff and volunteers will swing into action to deliver all donations on December 23.

> How to donate: You can drop off new toys, warm clothing or essential household items at the Cottage Family Centre’s bases in Cawdor Crescent and St Clair Street, Kirkcaldy.

Financial donations can be made directly to the appeal via bank transfer. Sort Code – 80-16-84 (Bank of Scotland); Account number 06006462; Reference COTTXMAS25

Fife Flyers stage their annual collection for the appeal at Sunday’s game.

The players will return to the ice after the match to accept donations of new toys as well as toiletries and new clothes from fans.

Run in association with the Supporters Club, fans can be rinkside to make their donations to the team.

The club said: “We are kindly asking fans to donate new gifts or toys, with a particular focus on items suitable for teen boys and girls aged 13 to 18 years old. Teens are often the age group most overlooked in holiday appeals, so any support in this area makes a big difference.

“That said, all donations are welcome—whether it’s something small, something large, or anything in between. Whatever you can afford to give will be greatly appreciated by the club, the Cottage Centre, and most importantly, the young people who will benefit.

"We encourage all supporters attending Sunday’s game to get involved and help us spread some festive cheer throughout our community. Your generosity can make the season brighter for local families who need it most.”
