Dalgety Bay man helps home schooling by turning refurbished laptops into Chromebooks

An IT expert from Dalgety Bay is helping children with home schooling by refurbishing outdated laptops and turning them into Chromebooks.

Brian Henderson has already delivered 50 laptops to families in the town as well as other parts of Fife in an effort to alleviate some of the problems that youngsters are facing while studying at home.

He said: “I’ve so far refurbished 20 laptops for pupils at Donibristle Primary School, and the rest have gone to others throughout Fife.

"There are poor kids trying to do their schoolwork on mobile phones – can you imagine that? There is no fun or motivation for them.

"All they really need is a browser to access their work on the Glow system that schools use, which is basically what a Chromebook is.

"It is super fast and super simple, so it is perfect for their school work – it’s an ideal workstation for them.”

Brian has been reaching out to families on several community Facebook pages in the area to find who could use one of his refurbished laptops.

"People have been contacting me not only to receive a laptop, but to donate old ones that they have around the house,” he said. “I have also been receiving donations of iPads as well so people can keep in touch with family members who are in care homes – some of the them have not seen their grandchildren in a year.

“I’ve been getting a lot of feedback on how helpful it has been.

"Having access to functioning laptops and iPads has really transformed lives.”
