Fife care home residents compete in bake off

Leven Beach care home staff organised the competition, which saw residents and their families baking tasty treats for judging, in a bid to keep those in the home entertained and in contact with those closest to them during lockdown.

Families dropped off their submissions at the door, ready to be tasted by the judges – the care home staff.

Certificates were given out for the winners, celebrating the best puddings and cakes, which were won by both the residents and relatives.

“It was a great success,” said manager Ruth Kinnear.

“It worked really well. We set the families the challenge of doing some baking and having it judged. They all took part and enjoyed it.”

The care home, which has had no cases of Covid-19, has been busy trying to keep the residents in contact with their relatives during lockdown.

Staff have set up calls using FaceTime and organised times for relatives to chat to the residents through the windows, allowing them to keep apart but still in contact.

Meanwhile, pipers have visited the home to perform, and events like bingo have helped to keep the residents entertained.

However, it is not just the care home residents who have been affected by the virus.

“Some of the staff can’t see their own families,” said Ruth.

“It impacts on relatives, residents and staff. We try to make sure everyone is being appreciated for what they are doing.”
