Fife community bids to take over village park

An East Neuk community group has been given the green light to take control of three beauty spots – but now it has to raise the funds to buy them from Fife Council.

The local authority has agreed to the asset transfer of Bow Butts park, the Pinkerton Triangle and South Kilminning, including the nature reserve, to the Crail Community Partnership.

The group is now in the process of raising funds to cover the legal fees needed for the first asset transfer, for Bow Butts park.

It has launched a fundraiser, offering various rewards to donors, including photographs, the chance to plant a hedge, and even the opportunity to sponsor the entire park.

The project follows a charrette held in the village in 2018, following the news that a large-scale housing development, including 320 houses, had been earmarked for the small village. That led to creation of the Crail Local Place Plan, which asked for a green corridor to be created through Crail, linking it to the Crail North development. The park would be part of that corridor.

Councillor Linda Holt said: “Please support the crowdfunder to help the community in Crail take over and improve Bow Butts park.

“Everyone has pulled together and worked really hard to get to this stage of safeguarding this important green space for all who live in and visit Crail. It’s a fantastic initiative which shows what communities can do if they set their minds to it.”
