Collydean Community Centre’s hosted an “opening ceremony” to mark the start of capital works.

Due to social distancing, attendance was by invitation only, but the ceremony was streamed live on Facebook so the community could still be part of it.

Two time capsules were buried containing a number of items to help tell the story of the centre and the community’s response to the Covid-19 crisis.

This included a cloth face covering and medical mask, photograph of a shielding box and food parcel, and all the rainbow pictures that the children have drawn since March.

The time capsules were buried by pupils from Collydean Primary, while high school pupil Niamdh Braid signed to “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus.

The refurbishment works to make the centre completely accessible for all began last week, and means that the lane down the side is temporarily closed.

This follows incredible fundraising efforts led by centre manager Rose Duncan, since it was re-purposed in March as a community anchor organisation following the coronavirus outbreak.

Jenny Gilruth MSP for Mid Fife and Glenrothes, said: “I was delighted to join staff, volunteers and local residents to mark the beginning of these important capital works at Collydean Community Centre.

“Rose and her team have been working tirelessly to deliver a community-led response to the coronavirus outbreak and help some of our most vulnerable families and individuals.

“When future generations open the time capsules buried as part the ceremony, they will learn about how the strength of our humanity shone through and why Collydean Community Centre is the beating heart of our community in North Glenrothes.”
