The hockey community, pupils, parents and politicians had backed MSP Willie Rennie’s petition, which argued for a 2G and a 3G pitch, rather than the planned two 3G pitches, which it is feared could impact on hockey in the area.

However, the local authority rejected the petition on the grounds that it related to a decision made by the North East Fife Area Committee in the last six months.

A letter to Mr Rennie from Fife Council said that the petition had been deemed ‘invalid’ and will not be progressed further.

“This is an insulting response from Fife Council,” said Mr Rennie.

“More than 1500 people have signed this petition – that is a significantly large group asking for the council to at least reconsider making both pitches 3G.

“Without even giving any consideration to the petition they have dismissed it.

People will rightly be infuriated that their objections were so swiftly dismissed.

“I am disappointed that the council has decided to not even look at this decision again despite how unpopular the decision not construct a 2G hockey pitch at the new Madras College.”

The original plans for the school included the plans for a sand-dressed (2G) pitch which formed part of the proposed sports facilities.

However, the current plans contain provisions for two 3G pitches, with the school having access to the University of St Andrews hockey pitches for nine hours per week. 3G pitches are not suitable for hockey for pupils over S3.
