The number of mourner permitted to attend funerals in Fife is set to go up from six to 20.

The long-awaited increase comes into effect on Monday (June 29).

The sensitive issue saw many relatives unable to pay their last respects to loved ones while lockdown restrictions were in place.

From Monday, Fife Council has said up to 20 people can now attend funeral services, but physical distancing measures remain in place.

The relaxation comes as the country begins to ease out of lockdown.

The local authority said it would help families to host larger ceremonies.

During lockdown, services from cerematoria in Kirkcaldy and Dunfermline were streamed online, while many funerals saw people line the streets to pay their last respects.

Numbers permitted to attend varied across the regions, and Fife did warn they may be held behind closed doors after groups gathered at the crematorium.
