Fife 'in Level 2 COVID restrictions by Christmas' forecast as cases drop

The forecast came from Mark Ruskell MSP after he was told by Jason Leitch, National Clinical Director, that the region was “beginning to turn the corner.”

The number of positive COVID cases have dropped 27 per cent, and are now below the Scottish average of 120 cases per 100,000 people.

The figures were revealedd during a Scottish Parliament’s Covid-19 committee meeting, and held out hope of restrictions being eased before the festive season.

Fife went into Level 3 in mid-November which saw hospitality venues in the frontline once again.

Now Mr Ruskell has offered a glimmer of hope of a move into less restrictive Level 2, as it was confirmed cases are starting to decline.

Mr Ruskell raised Fife’s category status with Professor Leitch who told him the region was ‘beginning to turn the corner’ with a drop in cases - but the region has to show a consistent decline over a longer period before it could move back down to Level 2.

Mr Ruskell MSP said, “It’s reassuring to see that the higher level of restrictions in Fife are starting to have an impact, and that’s really down to people sticking with the rules and staying at home.

“If Fife’s cases continue to decline, I’m hopeful the area will be in level 2 by Christmas, but to do so everyone will need to stay vigilant and stick with the rules for just a little longer.”
