Fife Council is asking parents of babies whose ashes were not returned to voice their views on a fitting memorial.

The move comes just days after it rejected plans for an angel sculpture, due to concerns the memorial would have religious connotations.

More than 100 families in Fife were affected by the scandal.

Alan Paul, senior manager said: “We know everyone deals with grief differently and individual families will have different views on what kind of memorial they would want to see in Fife.

“It is important to us that we get the views of as many bereaved parents as possible.

“Discussions as to how best to do this are at an early stage and we have drawn together a group of parents and other stakeholders to include representatives from SANDS Fife to help support this work.

“The group have already met with us and we have made good progress, but we’d like to hear from as many affected families as possible, so that they can be included.”

It is planned to erect the memorial in Dunfermline’s Townhill Country Park.

The baby ashes scandal emerged after parents discovered that ashes were disposed anonymously after being told by staff at Kirkcaldy and Dunfermline crematoria that the ashes were too small to be recovered.

Fife Council have since apologised to families and offered compensation, but work continues on plans for a memorial.
