Fife man releases book about friendship with legendary Scottish boxer, Ken Buchanan

Jock McInnes MBE, who has raised millions of pounds for local and national charities, has released his debut book: My Pal the Boxing Legend.

It features many stories of Jock’s time with legend Ken Buchanan – a former undisputed light heavyweight champion and a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

Among those to lose to the future boxing legend was Jock’s father, Bill. His mum, Nancy, also worked alongside Ken’s mum, Cathy, for a period of time. But it was not until Jock visited Ken’s pub in the mid-eighties that the pair struck up a friendship that still lasts to this day.

The book is split into ‘rounds’, with each recalling a story of the pair enjoying life together – with many of the stories taking place in Levenmouth.

“He would come and stay with my sister and brother in Methil,” Jock said. “He’s been to East Fife lots of times, as I’m a huge East Fife fan. It’s stories from when we went to Burns Suppers together, went on holiday together, our trips to the boxing hall of fame.”

Jock, an amateur boxer back in his day, was inspired to write about Ken after trying to research his own hero, boxing legend Benny Lynch.

Unable to find out anything about his day-to-day life, Jock felt it would be a shame if the same was to happen to Ken.

“Kenny loves it,” Jock said.

“He’s written two books himself. I’ve not sanitised it. I wrote the book how I speak – that’s me, that’s the way I talk.

“I didn’t put the book together to make money; I wanted people to see the other side of Kenny.

“It’s a book about a friendship.”
