Fife’s long-awaited return to school has been hit by last night’s thunderstorms.

Several schools have been closed and parents urged not to send pupils to their classes.

The alerts came just as families were preparing to make their journeys to school for the first time in five months,

Fife Council has confirmed that a number of schools are closed.

Flooding at Fair Isle Primary in Kirkcaldy has also resulted in its partial closure.

The school is closed to P4-7 pupils, but P1-3 are in.

The list of closures is:

Benarty Primary School

Burntisland Nursery

Burntisland Primary School

Denend Nursery

Denend Primary School and Nursery

Glenrothes High School

Lochgelly High School

St Ninians Nursery

St Ninians R C Primary School

Torryburn Nursery

Torryburn Primary School

Valley Nursery

Valley Primary School

The council has also advised there may be later starts required for pupils at Cardenden and Lochgelly Primaries.

There is now a staggered start at South Parks Primary School and Nursery in Glenrothes, while, also in the town, Collydean Primary has asked parents to hold off sending pupils in.
