Fife shop’s final day sale raises funds for dog rescue centre

A Lundin Links store forced to close because of Covid-19 has donated all of its last day sales to a Fife dog rescue centre.

Evelyn Craig has donated more than £900 to the Fife Dog Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Lochgelly, after shutting her shop for the final time.

Upcycle, which was opened in 2019, closed at the end of last month, with shoppers making the most of the final-day sale and raising funds for the centre.

“It wasn’t going as well as I’d hoped, but it was going OK,” said Evelyn about her shop.

“Then Covid-19 happened. Once it re-opened it started to go OK.

“Because all the other shops were closed we were busy. But then Covid-19 kept going on and on, and I thought I had to close it.”

Eager to make the most of her final weeks at the shop, Evelyn posted on Facebook her plans to raise money for the centre.

“I was feeling a bit low and not too well,” she said.

“My friends came round and offered to volunteer. One friend, who volunteered with her two daughters, does work for the dogs centre.

“I’d given 10 per cent to dogs and raised £200 for the home another time. Then on the final day I put on Facebook that I was going to donate 100 per cent to the homeless dogs.”

“I’m actually a cat person,” Evelyn joked.

As well as buying items, customers also donated their own stuff to be sold, raising more money, as well as handing in old dog blankets and collars, and cash donations.

While the Lundin Links shop has now shut, this is not the end for the Upcycle project.

As well as working from home, Evelyn now has a small booth in The Pop In, which can be found in Pittenweem.
