Fife stone mason pays tribute to NHS and school with donated carvings

A Cupar stonemason has paid tribute to the NHS and a local school with two decorative donations.

Simon Scott, who runs the Cupar-based SS Construction – a trusted trader – and the Fife Reclamation Facebook page, created stone carvings earlier this summer – one with a huge rainbow, and one with a love heart with ‘NHS’ written in the middle.

He asked his followers on Facebook for suggestions as to where the carvings should be donated. And, after thinking over his options, Simon gave the heart to Adamson Hospital and the rainbow to Kilmaron school.

“I didn’t make them with the intention of donating them,” said Simon.

“There were just a lot of rainbows and that in the news. Originally, I just made them to get more views. I didn’t want to sell them, though, so I ended up donating them.”

Each carving took a couple of days to make, as Simon got rid of the excess and shaped his two creations.

“A staff member at Kilmaron got in touch with the head teacher Isla, and she then got in touch with me. She told me the emblem of the school is a rainbow. I didn’t tell her at that point, but I’d made my decision.”

Simon decided to donate the second carving to the health centre, although that took a little convincing from his end. However, the carving is now the centre-piece at the entrance to the building.

“Hopefully it’ll make the patients smile,” he said.

Simon uses his Fife Reclamation page to highlight his passion for purchasing older items, which he sometimes uses to craft something new.

He says he might create more carvings in the future.

His next project will see him make two stone heads for Alan McEwen of Dandelion Stone Troughs.
