Fife student launches clothing range to get people into sport

Sam Winton, an Economics and International Relations student, created Here for Sport to raise funds to support athletes, clubs and institutions which break down barriers preventing people participating in sport.

Here for Sport currently has two collections, each raising funds for a key target area.

Proceeds from the classic range go to helping people overcome financial and logistical barriers to take part in sport, while the recently launched (to coincide with LGB History Month) LGBTQ+ range supports specific barriers faced by the LGBTQ+ community.

He has been working with national governing bodies such as British Rowing, Sport England and the National Lottery to help fund a rowing club in Coventry which will help divert young people from becoming involved with gangs into sport, as one of Here for Sport’s first projects.

Sam, who is also director of youth engagement with Scottish Rowing and a member of the University Boat Club, said: “Engaging people in sport is something very close to my heart.

“I was lucky to have discovered rowing when I came to the University of St Andrews and I want to help other young people find sport too.

“At home in Coventry, rowing wasn’t available to me and I want to change that as it is a sport that has given me so much.

“We know the power of sport, and we want to make sure that as many people can benefit. Sport has a transformative effect on people, improving their health – both mental and physical. We want everyone to benefit.”

Here for Sport has an official partnership with the University’s Sports Centre to provide training kit.
