It is estimated that around 94 men in the UK take their own lives each week – a disturbing figure an East Neuk runner is aiming to bring down.

Jacob Portchmouth finished a 94 mile run around Fife last week, doing around seven or eight miles a day, all while wearing a 10kg weighted vest to represent the weight people with mental health issues feel on their shoulders. But he did not do the run alone. The Anstruther student only did around 50 miles of the run, leaving his friends and family to do the other 44 miles. And that is the message Jacob wanted to get across for Movember – you will always have support.

“For Movember people are doing different challenges, but I wanted to do something a bit different,” said Jacob.“It’s important to know during the pandemic that it is OK to struggle and ask for support from friends and family.”Jacob ran every day last week, completing laps around Upper Largo, Tentsmuir and other Fife beauty spots. He put a post on Facebook promoting his run and asked friends and family for their help.Every day he highlighted a different mental health charity, from Calm to Young Minds, all with the aim of raising awareness of these support networks.“I have had my own struggles in the past,” Jacob added.“As a man you tend to get taught not to talk to your mates about your mental health and to man up and that nothing is supposed to affect you. It’s better to be open about your emotions and your mental health.”
