Fifer who broke neck and back nine months ago to walk from Dundee to Kirkcaldy for Maggie’s fundraiser

A Ladybank man, who broke his neck and back just nine months ago, is to walk from Dundee to Kirkcaldy as a thank you to Maggie’s.

Cameron Saile’s grandma and his ‘best friend’, Marian, was diagnosed with lung cancer last year, which has now spread to her bones and liver, giving her just months to live.

The family were devastated by the news, but, throughout the process, Maggie’s cancer support centre in Kirkcaldy has been there to help Marian and her family.

As a thank you, Cameron will be walking from Maggie’s in Dundee to Maggie’s in Kirkcaldy, with the help of his mum and a few friends, raising vital funds for the organisation.

“We want to do it for my gran and how great Maggie’s has been,” Cameron said. “They’ve given us somewhere to go and talk. It’s got a homely feeling, and you feel comfortable being able to speak. The support is second to none.”

The long-distance walk, due to take place in October, is a challenge for most people, but for Cameron it will be even harder. Late last year he broke his neck and back in a crash.

“It’s had an impact on how much I can do,” he said. “I try and run once a week. It’s been good to do such a positive thing after such a negative time.”

Cameron hopes to raise £1500, and when he passes the £800 mark he has another challenge to complete – getting his legs waxed.

“I kind of hope I don’t get to £800,” Cameron joked. “At least it’ll be a good laugh.”
