Fifers urged to sign petition supporting 100ft whale sculptures and pier plans for Leven

The Levenmouth Whale Project team has launched a petition calling on funding bodies, local councils and the Scottish government to work together to turn the dream into a reality.

“We had plans for information stands and extensive public engagement in the spring and summer at events in and around Levenmouth, but these have all been cancelled due to the pandemic,” said chairman Eugene Clarke.

“We look forward to reviving these plans as soon as we can, but in the meantime we’re going virtual, and launching a petition. I know petitions work because of their impact during the Levenmouth Rail Campaign.”

Despite plans recently being announced for a giant whale sculpture in Dundee, Mr Clarke says the projects could end up complementing each other.

“Whales are a powerful motif,” he said. “They not only recall an important piece of local industrial history, their return to the Forth also bears witness to our changing climate and the overwhelming need for conservation of our natural resources.

“So it’s no surprise that Dundee has latched on to our idea with a giant flattened whale canopy for its waterfront. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

“The Dundee project will complement the Levenmouth project. With a visitor centre dedicated to whale and marine life and giant whales leaping up in the Forth at Levenmouth, we’re now on course to create an even more irresistible attraction – a whale sculpture trail for Scotland.”
