Fife’s answer to Joe Wicks offers free fitness classes for kids

A St Andrews fitness instructor is taking on Joe Wicks for the new king of kids fitness.

Fraser Allan has been teaching Functional Fitness Kids in St Andrews for three years, but after lockdown he wanted to keep his junior members moving.

Immediately starting up Zoom classes, he had the children using household items for weights and inventive movements to make fitness enjoyable.

“One of the benefits of Zoom classes, is the children get constant feedback and encouragement,” Fraser said.

“It makes them feel a part of group and it keeps them coming back.”

Fraser has been a CrossFit coach for all ages for three years and is also undertaking a degree in Sport Science at the University of Abertay while he continues to take both adult and children classes at Functional Fitness St Andrews.

“The kid’s classes are the highlight of my week,” he said. “With many children cooped up in small spaces, I wanted to make this available to all the children in Scotland. So it is completely free to join our zoom classes.”

Currently only 65 per cent of adults in Scotland meet the recommended physical activity and 26 per cent of kids are said to fit into the obese category (Public Health Scotland).

“If we get kids excited about fitness when they are young, the prospect of them having a positive outlook on exercise and health when they are adults should be much higher,” Fraser explained.

Fraser’s Functional Fitness Kids Zoom classes are available to all children, and completely free of charge.

“In order to join, parents must get in touch for a secure password and then turn up for class,” Fraser said.

“They will meet new friends and can chat during class. The kids love being able to see each other and have a more interactive experience.”

One of the mini fitness members Elise Ferguson (six) is a committed attendee.

“I like jumping around and seeing my friends,” Elise said. “It is also nice to chat with Fraser and he is always funny.”

Fraser and his company Fraser Allan Fitness, which runs the Functional Fitness Kids Zoom, will maintain that all kids zoom classes are free while quarantine continues.
