Fife has many unsung heroes who have gone the extra mile to help others during the coronavirus lockdown. They are working hard behind the scenes to make sure that our buses still run, our prescriptions dispensed, and our services all keep ticking over. They deserve their moment in the spotlight as part of our Big Thank You.

Denise Gartshore, from Markinch is a community champion at Glenrothes Morrisons and has been helping to organise and deliver essentials to vulnerable people who are shielding during the coronavirus pandemic.

Denise said: “I have worked at Morrisons in Glenrothes for 25 years, and I have been the community champion for five years now. There is so much to the role, I organise donations to people who are fundraising, I arrange bag packing at the tills, I work with charities who are doing collections in store, I organise all of the Christmas time activities such as carol singing and I also organise the doorstep deliveries that we offer to people who are vulnerable or shielding.

“We have mostly been dealing with the doorstep deliveries during the lockdown, I have met some fantastic characters while delivering their shopping.

“I deliver shopping to four wonderful ladies who all live next door to each other in Star of Markinch, when I come around with their shopping they all come out to their doorsteps and we always have a lovely chat.”

Denise goes on to say that her role of community champion is extremely rewarding and during the lockdown the role is vital to help some of the most vulnerable people in the area.

She adds: “My job is so rewarding and I love doing it, when this is all over I will have so many parties to go to.

People have really come together, before no one had time, now people have more for each other and have started to appreciate one another.

“I’m looking forward for this to be all over, hopefully we can keep the doorstep deliveries as winter is just around the corner and it really helps people in the community.”

While I have your attention, I also have an important request to make of you. In order for us to continue to provide high quality and trusted local news on this free-to-read site, I am asking you - wherever possible and providing it is safe for you to do so - to also please purchase a copy of our newspapers; the Fife Free Press, Fife Herald, St Andrews Citizen, East Fife Mail and Glenrothes Gazette.

Inevitably falling advertising revenues will start to have an impact on local newspapers and the way we continue to work during this period of uncertainty.

The support of our readers has never been more important as we try to make sure that we keep you connected with your community during this time. But being your eyes and ears comes at a price. We need your support more than ever to buy our newspapers during this crisis.

Our team of trusted reporters are working incredibly hard behind the scenes - from kitchen tables and spare bedrooms - to look at how we can do this, and your continued support of our newspapers across Fife will help to protect their viability in the days and weeks ahead.
