Fife has many unsung heroes who have gone the extra mile to help others during the coronavirus lockdown. They are working hard behind the scenes to make sure that our buses still run, our prescriptions dispensed, and our services all keep ticking over. They deserve their moment in the spotlight as part of our Big Thank You.

Sarah Fowler, who is the home manager at the Chapel Level Care Home in Kirkcaldy. has been working throughout the pandemic to ensure that the residents in her care are well looked after.

Sarah said: “I manage a team of nurses and care staff, and provide them with support and guidance to make sure that our residents receive the appropriate care and are comfortable and happy.

“A normal day in the care home can be very busy, my first port of call in the morning is to do my rounds and make sure that all of the staff and residents are okay and to find out if anyone is having any problems.

“I have a total of 72 staff that I manage – it can be quite stressful at times.”

Although her days are busy, Sarah said that her job is very fulfilling, she said: “My job is extremely rewarding, the residents have a say on how the care home is run, recently we refurbished the care home and the residents had a lot of input, we want them to be as happy as they can be.”

Sarah adds that initially when the pandemic started she and her staff had some fears, but as time went on and the introduction of regular testing has alleviated their worries.

Sarah added: “We all had fears to begin with, if someone coughed or sneezed you were worried that they might have the virus, but now we are tested each week so it is reassuring to know that I’m Covid free.

“I hope that in the future that people will stop and think before visiting people in the home if they are unwell, people don’t realise how vulnerable care home residents are.

“I’m exceptionally proud of my staff, who have all been extremely professional throughout the pandemic, even with all of their own anxieties regarding the coronavirus they are doing an excellent job.”
