The annual dredge removes the natural build-up of silt from the harbour area to ensure that the harbour is safe and accessible for ships arriving at the quayside.

Kirkcaldy Harbour hosts around 42 vessel calls per year, the majority of which are cargo ships with essential wheat for Carr’s Milling plant.

The dredging will begin on Tuesday and is expected to take two weeks. The team will work around tidal conditions and it is likely they will need to work through the night.

Ashley Nicholson, senior harbourmaster, said: “It’s vital we keep the navigational channel into the harbour free of silt and sand.

"The harbour provides an essential service with vessels arriving for Carr’s Milling, allowing them to keep Scotland supplied with bread products.

“We recognise there will be some noise and appreciate the patience of residents while we undertake this vital work.”
