Earlier this year, the Scottish Government announced a £10 million fund to support active travel, noting that cycling had become more popular during lockdown, as vehicle use had dropped.

The council has now asked Sustrans Scotland, which helps create spaces that are suitable for walking and cycling, for £2.57 million, some of which would be spent in Levenmouth should the bid be succesful.

The changes would complement the current active travel infrastructure that is already in the area.

Local councillor Colin Davidson, a regular cyclist, welcomed the bid for funding.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity to be at the forefront, working with Sustrans to improve health,” he said.

“This is a huge step in the right direction and council officers have to be praised.”

Cllr Altany Craik, convener of Fife Council’s Economy, Tourism, Strategic Planning and Transportation Committee, said: “We’re pleased to be able to access this funding and can confirm that we’ve submitted a bid for £2.57m after consulting with our seven area conveners to make sure local priorities were considered.

“Until we hear back from Sustrans we’re unable to confirm the exact details of the approved projects. However, what I can say is that they are all related to project ideas that have been submitted by community groups, elected members and roads users in recent years.

“Unfortunately, the letter from Fife Greens arrived too late to be considered, but we will look at their submission to identify any gaps or opportunities and submit a further bid for funding should we be able to do so.”
