The town’s historic funfair opens on Wednesday (April 15) for six days, turning part of the Esplanade into a sea of colour, noise and thrills.
The showmen started to arrive over the weekend, and the site is now a giant construction set as all the rides are moved carefully into place and then built up.
Watching the market take shape has always been part of the build-up, with many locals taking in the work in a walk along the road or Esplanade.
Across the weekend a convoy of articulated lorries arrived, and were guided into place before the unloading started. On Sunday, a giant crane swung into operation to raise the steel girders for a rollercoaster, while a big wheel took shape near the Basin.
Dodgems sat stacked on the back of a lorry waiting on the track to be set up, while ticket booths were rolled into position, and the food vendors began their preparatory work on their own particular spot.
The market officially opens at 2:00pm on Wednesday – the traditional opening time – and thereafter from 1:00pm each day until 10:00pm.
