Jack Sneddon: tributes to former Glenrothes Gazette editor and mentor to many reporters
Jack Sneddon, former editor of the Glenrothes Gazette and Fife Leader, has passed away after a short illness. He was 70.
Born on July 10, 1955 in Kirkcaldy, Jack grew up above his parents’ shop on Victoria Road.
He attended Kirkcaldy High School before embarking on a long and distinguished career in local journalism. He began his career with the Gazette and served on the title for 18 years as a reporter, chief reporter and then editor. He was also a mentor to many young trainee reporters starting out in their careers, who all valued his guidance and experience.
At the Gazette, Jack established himself as something of a local celebrity through his regular articles, including his much-loved ‘Day in the Life’ features, and ‘Jack on the Box’ column.

His passion for aviation led to the remarkable achievement of flying with the Royal Air Force on three separate occasions, with subsequent feature articles in the Gazette – a Phantom with 111 squadron at RAF Leuchars, a Tornado and memorably with the world-renowned RAF aerobatic team, the Red Arrows.
Jack then moved to the Fife Free Press Group’s head office in Kirk Wynd where he edited the Fife Leader free newspaper for a number of years.
In later life, Jack enjoyed a second career as events co-ordinator at West Park Care Home in Leslie, retiring in 2022.
A devoted family man, Jack was also a passionate cook – his chilli-con-carne was legendary amongst family and friends. He also shared a love of music, film and sport with all who knew him.
Jack is survived by his wife, Wilma, sons, Craig and Scott, daughter-in-law, Sevana, and grandson, Rasul.
