It has been part of store’s shop front for 20 years – and is a focal point for many passers by in the Mercat Shopping Centre.

In November, store owner, Jim Collins, posted on Facebook that the clown needed a new motor, and the German company which originally manufactured the part had ceased trading.

His message was shared over 1200 times and reached over 100,000 people – two of whom were able to source a new motor from China, and adapt it to fit the specific measurements of the clown.

Mr Collins said: “We have been overwhelmed with the response and the memories it has evoked for many of our customers. To show our gratitude, we donated £100 to the local foodbank.”

Stephen Roberts, centre manager, added: “The Present Shop has been a fixture at Mercat for a long time now, and the clown has always been a favourite of mine, too.

“It’s so wonderful to see members of the public coming together during a time of need to help Jim and the store restore the clown to its former glory.”
