A community hub, which has been in the heart of Kirkcaldy for the last 30 years, is closing.

St Bryce Kirk Centre has been a meeting place for many groups and individuals over the years and it has also been host to many cultural and educational events, however the Kirk Session has agreed that the centre is “not sustainable in its current form” and will cease operation this week.

With government restrictions surrounding Covid-19 not looking likely to end any time soon, it is not certain when community groups and events will be able to be held in the building again.

As a result of the difficult decision, all of the staff at the centre in St Brycedale Avenue have been made redundant.

But the church has stressed it is not the end and the building will continue to be used – when government guidance allows – although it will be looking at a new way of working.

Reverend Ken Froude said: “Kirkcaldy has been fortunate to have the St Bryce Kirk Centre as an asset for the last 30 years.

“Many groups have met there. Many cultural and educational events have taken place there and the Coffee Bar has provided an ideal meeting place for friends and individuals to enjoy.

"However, due to the restrictions the St Bryce Kirk Centre has been closed since March and there is little prospect of a pickup in “business” over the next few months.

"Over the past few years, the Church Centre has been running at a deficit and the Covid pandemic has now brought matters to a head.

"After exploring all options, it is with great regret, the Kirk Session has decided that the Centre is not sustainable in its current form and, as of this week, will cease operation.

"Sadly all staff have had to be made redundant, despite their abilities, hard work and commitment, and this situation is no reflection on them. It is also a great sadness for those who have, over the years, enjoyed a welcome, a sense of community and a place to serve - especially the large team of much valued volunteers.

“But it is not the end.

"The church building will continue as a venue for groups to meet and will be open as required.

"Community and church groups and activities will continue.”

Rev Froude confirmed that St Bryce Kirk will re-open for worship fairly soon, although restrictions will be in place.

He added: “Large events and caterings will also continue to be welcome when permitted, just not any time soon.

“To support these initiatives, staff will be brought in as needed, with office-bearers and members being involved in this new way of working.

“As a Christian Church, a life giving faith lies at the heart of St Bryce Kirk.

"When the time is right, we will again find a way to be a vibrant “Open Door” community in the heart of the town.

"There now begins a time of waiting and watching for the opportunity to re-start.”
