Brian Allan set up the fundraiser to raise money for the ward after his wife, Carla, went through four difficult pregnancies, with hospital staff saving her life on several occasions.

The dad of four has already logged 50 miles and aims to complete the rest of the grueling 104.8 mile challenge by the end of February.

Brian had originally set his fundraising target at £500, but has already netted a whopping £1500 as people in Kirkcaldy have rallied round to raise the cash for the vital service.

He said: “I wanted to raise money for the maternity ward to show my appreciation and gratitude for everything that the staff there has done to help my wife and my family.

"Carla’s first pregnancy went smoothly, but during her second pregnancy she was admitted to hospital in the 30th week because of complications, and after a five week stay in the Vic, she had to have an emergency caesarean section.

"When she was pregnant with our fourth child, Carla’s planned c-section was brought forward due to reduced movements. Three days later she was admitted back to hospital with a spinal leak -fluid leaking from the head through the spinal cord.”

Brian and Carla were overjoyed last year as Carla fell pregnant again with their fifth child, but tragically lost the child as a result of an ectopic pregnancy.

"We have always wanted five kids,” Brian added. “But Carla collapsed in the weeks leading up to Christmas and had to be rushed to the Vic. She lost two and a half litres of blood and had to get a blood transfusion.

"If it wasn’t for their quick acting she could have died.

"The staff at the hospital have saved her life on more than one occasion now. I have so much respect for them.

"They have always helped us in any way they can, and treated us so well. They all work so hard to make sure everyone is well and doing okay, and I just want to give something back to them.”
