Kirkcaldy MP: Moving Fife into Tier 3 was the right choice

Neale Hanvey, MP for Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath, said the hope is by acting now there is a better chance of getting the virus back under control and avoid more damaging measures.

He said: “The last thing anyone wanted to hear was that Fife was facing further restrictions.

"But with a 40 percent increase in figures over a seven-day period, this was clearly the right choice.

"The hope is that by acting now we can put the brakes on, get the virus back under control, and avoid even more damaging measures.

“I’ve made no secret of my support for local businesses and I know they’ll be really worried at the moment. I’d urge them to look into the support available from the Scottish Government – support that is over and above the UK Government’s furlough scheme. Please also get in touch with my office if you think I can help in any way.

“This is a situation not of our making and I understand why some folk are growing weary of these disruptions to our lives.

"I know that these are big sacrifices – we’re talking about people’s family lives, jobs and livelihoods.

"But as a former nurse, I also know how much the NHS staff appreciate our efforts to protect the capacity at Victoria Hospital and across other NHS sites in Fife.”

The SNP member added: “We pulled together through the first wave and I am hopeful we’ll find the resolve to pull together once more.”
