The SNP MP said organisers had made ‘the right call’ even though it will be disappointing for the tens of thousands of fair-goers who attend the popular event each year.

Mr Hanvey’s comments come after Alex James Colquhoun, chairman of the Scottish section of The Showmen's Guild of Great Britain, said that, following a full and careful consideration of the pandemic restrictions, the decision had been taken to postpone the historic event scheduled for April – with the possibility of re-scheduling it later on this year.

Mr Hanvey said: “Postponing is clearly the right call given the ongoing threat of the pandemic and the need to follow public-health guidance.

"But that doesn’t make it any less disappointing for everyone in Kirkcaldy and the surrounding area.

“After the cancellation last year, I raised the issue in Westminster and highlighted the need to support the people involved.

"I will be making my voice heard again on this issue.”Mr Hanvey added: “The reality is that the creative and cultural sectors are among the worst affected by the fallout from the pandemic, and many folk in these sectors have fallen through the gaps in UK government support.”

He added: “But let’s be clear, this is a temporary blip in a 700-year-old tradition.

“The Links Market will be back, hopefully maybe even later in the year.

"That’s why it’s so important we stick with the restrictions to speed up the pace that life can return to normal.”
