Leven charity helps vulnerable pensioners

A Leven charity, which helps elderly people at risk of social isolation, has gone above and beyond to help its vulnerable clients.

Arden House Projects runs a range of services aimed at making sure its 66 clients are not left feeling isolated.

In mid-March, the charity was forced to stop its services because of the coronavirus crisis, however, its staff came up with a plan straight away to make sure the clients were not left alone.

“Almost immediately we started a befriending phone service, keeping in contact with our clients,” said team leader, Craig Duwar.

“Many are isolated in their own homes and it was crucial to maintain that link with them.”

Many of the clients are in their 70s, 80s and 90s, with one even preparing to mark their 100th birthday, and some have dementia or other health-related issues.

As well as calling the clients, the staff have shop for them twice a week, pick up prescriptions, and have linked with the Rotary Club of Leven and local restaurant Agenda, who are providing free meals to 26 of the clients.

“Full marks to Agenda for the quality of the meals and to the Rotary club for organising the logistics.”

One of the few positives of the crisis has been seeing the various groups and clubs in the Levenmouth area link up to look after and support local people.

“There is a level of collaboration I’ve not seen before,” said Craig. “It’s encouraging. I hope it will set a standard for years to come.”

The staff are now working out how they might be able to do face-to-face visits in the future, as some clients are now struggling without direct contact.

There are also concerns about funding in the future.

“We’re OK in terms of funding just now,” Craig said.

“There may be pressures in 2021. I do have concerns about that, but we just have to focus on the here and now.

“We’re making a small loss but are maintaining full wages and are comfortable with our strategy.”
