Leven woman completes 330-mile challenge for breast cancer charity

A Leven woman has completed a 330-mile walk and raised thousands of pounds for a breast cancer charity.

Janis Moffat had hoped to raise around £150 for Breast Cancer Now, a research and care charity which supports people affected by the disease, but ended up collecting £3710 – with money still coming in.

The challenge set by the charity had been to walk 400,000 steps for the month of October to raise funds and awareness of the disease, but Janis ended up almost doubling that amount.

She set off every morning from her home in Letham Glen, heading down to Leven Beach Holiday Park, along the beach, and then back home, walking as many streets in the town as she could.

Sometimes she would even set off at 6am if she had to look after her grandson, Travis, that day.

Janis ended up walking around 22,000-25,000 steps every day, with a final step count of 746,140, smashing the challenge.

“I’m so so proud of myself, I didn’t think I’d even raise £100,” Janis said.

“I just can’t believe it. I’m so happy. And there’s still money to come in.”

Janis had previously done a fundraising walk back in 2009, but had not done anything since.

However, when lockdown started, she started to do more walking around Leven – a habit which has continued as the restrictions have eased and helped raise money for a vital cause.

While she has no plans at the moment for another fundraiser, she does not rule one out in the future.

If she does another in the coming years, she hopes to do it for either dementia or prostate cancer, diseases which affected her late father.
