Levenmouth Foodbank use expected to ‘go through the roof’ in coming weeks

Foodbank use in Levenmouth is expected to ‘go through the roof’ in the coming weeks, as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

With some people now out of work and others receiving 80 per cent of their normal pay, more people are being forced to go to the foodbank in need of support.

The situation for families has also been made more difficult because of the closure of schools.

Cassie Marshall, project co-ordinator at Levenmouth Foodbank, said the situation is “crazy” at the moment.

The volunteers are leaving pre-made food parcels at the foodbank door, meaning folk do not need to come into contact, while a delivery system has also been introduced.

Ms Marshall said there was a problem getting hold of basic food items, like bread, meat and tinned meat, and that, while there had only been a slight rise in users at the moment, the team expected the number to grow.

“There has been a slight rise but we’re expecting that to go through the roof,” she said.

“We’ll be inundated. The forecast is that will be in about a month. We’ve had some referrals for bigger families where someone has lost a job. We’ve had a surge in families because of Covid-19.”

Ms Marshall said people are still donating items, but that panic buying and food shortages has made it difficult to get hold of certain items.

The foodbank has run out of UHT milk, diluting juice, rice pudding and custard, as well as the items listed earlier.

The community cafe has also been cancelled.

Items can be donated at the food trolley in Sainsbury’s, and Bank of Scotland in Leven, and at the foodbank, at Methil Evangelical Church, Monday and Friday, 3.30-5.30pm.
