Local posties Dougie Beattie and David Smith have each dressed up in a range of costumes, from Fred Flinstone to Snow White, in a bid to cheer up locals during this Covid-19 pandemic.

“One of my pals dared me to do it, because he had seen one in England doing it,” Dougie said. “I used to go to Rewind (the music festival) and had a lot of the costumes.”

Dougie has been wearing the costumes while delivering post in the Largo area – and has been receiving great, and sometimes unexpected, reactions.

“I got a few wolf whistles when I was in the Snow White outfit,” he said.

“It’s been good because it’s cheered people up and it puts a smile on their face. I just did it for a laugh. I didn’t expect it to take off like it did.”

Meanwhile, David, known as the ‘best postie in the Broom’, has dressed up as Robin, a whoopee cushion and Captain Jack Sparrow, with kids sometimes waiting for him to come by.

“I’ve worn one every day,” David said.

“One was a bit uncomfortable, but it was worth it. I just wanted to put a smile on people’s faces.

“An ambulance driver asked why I was wearing it. I told her it was to make people smile. She said it had made her day. If you can make an ambulance driver’s day, then it’s been worth it.”

Both David and Dougie are planning on wearing more costumes in the future.
